Chelsea is the small village at the gate of Gatineau Park, about 20 minutes from downtown Ottawa. It packs a big spa, the park's best hikes and a serious restaurant into a few kilometres.

Nordik Spa-Nature

The reason most people drive to Chelsea. Nordik bills itself as the largest spa in North America: outdoor hot and cold pools, saunas, a salt-water float pool, relaxation rooms and restaurants built into the hillside. The routine is simple: heat, cold plunge, rest, repeat. It's at its best on a snowy winter evening.

Tip: weekends and holidays sell out, especially in winter. Book your entry time ahead, and go on a weekday if you can.

Nordik Spa: a first-time guide

  • Who can go: it's for ages 16 and up; 16- and 17-year-olds need an adult and government ID.
  • Bring: a swimsuit, sandals (required in the spa), and a robe, or rent one there. A reusable water bottle is allowed, but outside food and alcohol aren't.
  • The routine: hot (a pool or sauna), then a cold plunge, then rest. Repeat three or four times.
  • Don't miss the Aufguss: a sauna ritual with music and aromatic towel-waving, run on a schedule through the day. Check the times when you arrive.
  • Know the zones: some areas, like the Källa saltwater float pool, are strictly silent. Phones belong in your locker.
  • Book a time: reserve your entry online, especially for weekends, and arrive early to get settled.

Nordik Spa in winter

The best season. Steam rising off the pools, snow on the trees and the cold plunge doubles as the snowbank. Evenings are magical but busy, so book well ahead.

Is Nordik Spa worth it?

If you'll stay long enough to do several cycles and use the float pool, yes: it's a full day out, not a quick soak. If you only have two hours, or you'd rather talk the whole time, a smaller spa may suit you better. Weekdays feel noticeably calmer.

Hotels near Nordik Spa

Nordik has overnight lodging on site. Otherwise, Chelsea, Wakefield (15 minutes north) and Gatineau (15 minutes south) all work as a base.

Gatineau Park from Chelsea

Gatineau Park's visitor centre is in Old Chelsea, and the park's most-visited spots are a short drive up the parkways.

Pink Lake

A short loop trail (about 2.5 km) around a deep, green meromictic lake, which is unusual enough that you're asked to stay on the boardwalks and out of the water. Easy, pretty and good for kids.

Champlain Lookout

The classic view over the Ottawa Valley from the top of the Eardley Escarpment. Drive right up in season, or ride the parkway by bike. Sunset in early October is the one to aim for.

Mackenzie King Estate

The former prime minister's summer estate, with gardens and the ruins he collected. Seasonal, so check opening dates before you go.

Meech Lake

Clear water, small beaches and a popular swim spot on hot days. Parking fills early on summer weekends.

Winter note: most Gatineau Park parkways close to cars in winter and become groomed ski and snowshoe trails. Plan to park at the lots in Chelsea and go in on skis or foot.

Old Chelsea village

The village strip along Chemin Old Chelsea is small but well fed. Les Fougères is the destination: chef-driven Quebec cooking that people drive out from Ottawa for. Chelsea Pub is the easygoing après-hike option, and Biscotti & Cie is the café stop for coffee and pastries. You'll also find a little grocery for local goods and a distillery on the square.

Camp Fortune

Just up the road, Camp Fortune is the closest ski hill to Ottawa, with night skiing in winter. In summer it switches to mountain biking and an aerial park with zip lines and treetop courses, which makes it a solid family half-day.

Camp Fortune in summer: book aerial park time slots ahead on weekends, wear closed shoes, and check the minimum age and height rules for each course before you promise the kids.

Chelsea in winter

Winter might be Chelsea's best season: Nordik at its most atmospheric, Camp Fortune's lit runs, and Gatineau Park's groomed ski and snowshoe trails starting from the lots near the visitor centre. See our Ottawa winter guide and the Gatineau Park guide.
