Merrickville locks

A flight of three locks on the Rideau Canal, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. From mid-May to mid-October, Parks Canada staff operate them by hand, and watching a boat lock through is the classic Merrickville activity. The lockstation grounds have picnic tables and the industrial ruins of the old mills.

Merrickville Blockhouse Museum

Built in 1832–33 to defend the canal, it's the largest blockhouse on the Rideau and never saw battle. It became the first lockmaster's home and is now a local history museum, open in the warmer months.

Shops and food

The main street is lined with independent shops, galleries and cafés, from a year-round Christmas shop to fine-food stores. Look out for "Gary", a six-metre green alien outside one of the shops: hard to miss and good for a photo.

Walk or cycle

Cycling loops start at Blockhouse Park, including an 18 km loop east to Burritts Rapids. In winter, the village's walking trails make a quiet snowshoe or hike.

Getting there

About an hour from downtown Ottawa by car. Without a car, take VIA Rail to Smiths Falls and a 15-minute taxi.
